Why Scientists Still Disagree on When Dogs Were Domesticated

It isn't just my house. Walk down any street in my town, or almost any town in almost any country, and you'll find the same thing waiting behind a door or straining at a leash.

The dog. Of every animal we've let into our lives, none has settled in as completely as this one, or as strangely, once you start asking how it happened.

Look up when dogs were domesticated and you'll get numbers that seem to contradict each other: 32,000 years ago, 16,000, 14,000. They aren't contradictions. They're answers to different questions, and almost nobody explains which is which. In March 2026, two studies in Nature pushed one of those numbers back — by about 5,000 years in one of them — and the other closes by naming what it still can't answer. This piece sorts out what each figure actually measures.

The Wolves Who Wouldn't Leave

One leading hypothesis for how this all began starts at the edge of an Ice Age settlement, not with a handshake, but with garbage.

The idea: some wolves, warier of hunger than of people, kept coming back for scraps instead of running off with the others. I find that version oddly more believable than any fireside myth. It doesn't ask either species to be noble about it.

A 2023 review in Genes calls this the opening of an anthropogenic niche, and lays the whole thing out in two stages. First, certain wolf populations drift into the margins of human life, drawn by food and shelter, before anyone is choosing anything on purpose. Only later do people start favoring the calmer, easier animals.

That second stage is where deliberate selection begins. In that model, the first stage is just ecology.

Direct evidence from any one campsite is thin, so this is the best-supported explanation built from a broad pattern, not a recovered scene. But it reframes the question in a way I keep coming back to. If the opening move was made by wolves, then the thing we usually call an achievement was, at the start, closer to an accident.

Whatever the exact mechanics, the partnership had an unglamorous opening act, and the record only hints at the details.

Three Numbers That Don't Mean the Same Thing

Here is the confusion at the heart of every article you've read on this, including the ones that disagree with each other. Three different figures get called "when dogs were domesticated." They measure three different things.

1. When the lineages split

Genetics can estimate when the ancestors of dogs stopped interbreeding with the ancestors of modern wolves. That 2023 review puts the window very wide: as early as 32,000 years ago, as late as 16,000 to 11,000.

The window is wide because the method is indirect. Researchers count mutations and work backward, and the answer shifts depending on which genetic markers they use and how they calibrate the clock. Different reasonable choices produce estimates tens of thousands of years apart.

A split also isn't domestication. It marks the earliest point domestication could have begun — an upper bound, not a date, and one drawn from an estimate with a very wide margin of its own.

2. When we have a bone we can prove

Archaeology wants something you can hold. That turns out to be brutally hard, because in the early stages a dog skeleton and a wolf skeleton are nearly identical. For decades, the argument ran on skeletal measurements.

Until March 2026, the oldest specimen confirmed by DNA was about 10,900 years old.

3. When the process actually happened

Domestication isn't an event. It has no date at all, only a span. Asking for the year is a bit like asking for the day a language became a different language.

Most of the apparent disagreement dissolves once you separate these. A geneticist's 32,000 and an archaeologist's 14,000 can both be correct, because they aren't answering the same question.

What actually changed in 2026

The second number is the one that moved, and it moved a long way.

In March 2026, researchers recovered whole genomes from Palaeolithic sites — Pınarbaşı in Türkiye at roughly 15,800 years old and Gough's Cave in Britain at roughly 14,300 — pushing the oldest confirmed dog back by about 5,000 years.

The study compared those genomes against more than a thousand ancient and modern dogs and wolves. The detail that stopped me wasn't the date. It was the resemblance.

Dogs living more than 4,000 kilometers apart turned out to be close relatives, members of a population that spread between roughly 18,500 and 14,000 years ago. Greger Larson, one of the corresponding authors, said the first dogs "spread rapidly across Europe."

What the Newest Study Says It Can't Answer

Location has been contested even longer than timing.

A 2016 announcement from the University of Oxford proposed that domestication happened twice, independently, on opposite sides of Eurasia, with an early European line that was later mostly replaced. A 2022 study in Nature found dogs overall closer to ancient wolves from eastern Eurasia, while dogs in Southwest Asia and Africa carried up to half their ancestry from a second source related to wolves in that region.

Whether that second source meant a second domestication, or only later mixing with local wolves, stayed open.

The companion paper to the 2026 findings went after exactly that. Anders Bergström and colleagues analysed 216 canid remains, 181 of them from Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Europe, and tested whether Europe's earliest dogs need a western wolf source to explain their ancestry.

They don't. A single eastern wolf source is enough to explain where their ancestry came from. That rules out the older proposal that Europe's Palaeolithic dogs came from a separate domestication of their own — though it settles Europe's ancestry, not the world's.

Then comes the sentence I didn't expect. Having established that, the authors close by stating that their results "cannot resolve where in the world, and how many times, dogs were domesticated."

A study that size, in that journal, ending by naming what it still can't reach. I don't read that as a hedge. It's the actual condition of the field, and it is most of the reason the answers you find online keep contradicting each other.

The Wolf-Pup Myth Isn't Wrong, Just Incomplete

The version most people know is tidy: someone found a wolf pup, raised it by the fire, and kept doing that until it turned into a dog. It's the one I grew up with too, told exactly that way, and I never thought to question it until I started digging into this piece.

That story isn't wrong, exactly. It's just not the whole animal.

The 2023 review lays out several pathways running at once. Some early domestication may have come from people directly raising pups. Some from wolf populations that gravitated toward humans on their own. Some from wolves and humans cooperating on hunts.

A related hypothesis proposes an order inside that sequence: stress and wariness around humans easing first, with social bonding mattering more only as the relationship matured. That's a proposal about mechanism, not a settled finding.

It's the origin story a species deserves — too tidy to be entirely true, and too useful to be entirely false.

What Twelve Dogs and Eleven Wolves Hinted At

The evidence doesn't all come out of the ground. Some of the sharpest lines between wolf and dog show up in blood.

Twelve dogs. Eleven wolves. In a 2024 whole-blood RNA study, researchers reported 1,567 genes that were more or less active in dogs than in wolves, plus 11 gene co-expression networks containing 4,402 genes in total.

In plain terms: those genes don't all act alone. Many cluster into teams that rise and fall together rather than switching on one at a time.

Most of the differences involved translation and gene-expression regulation — the cellular machinery that turns genetic instructions into proteins. Not new genes, in other words, so much as old genes being run at a different volume.

It's an odd thing to sit with. Some of the gap between a wild wolf and the dog asleep on my floor may come down to which genes happen to be turned up and which turned down.

The sample was small, though, and the authors say so. Twenty-three animals can't pin the change to one mechanism, say which behavior came first, or identify the original wolf population dogs descend from.

Something shaped this animal over a very long time. Whether that shaping ever stopped is a different question, and a much more recent one.

The Choosing Never Stopped

The process that started at that campsite never actually finished. It moved indoors.

A 2024 survey of 1,077 Austrian dog owners found the most common reasons for choosing a dog were the breed itself (29 percent), a spur-of-the-moment decision (24 percent), work or sports ability (22 percent), and rescuing an animal in need (17 percent). Guarding ability showed up in 0.6 percent of answers.

That last figure caught me. Guarding is the job the folk version of this story puts first, and here it ranked below the dog's age and sex. Modern preferences obviously can't tell us what people wanted 14,000 years ago. But it is a small check on how confidently we read the present backward.

Households with children leaned toward friendly, easy-to-manage, easy-to-train dogs, and were less likely than childless households to give rescuing as a reason at all — a pattern that says more about who's doing the choosing than about the dog. It's a convenience sample, not a nationally representative one, so the percentages shouldn't be read as universal. But the shape is hard to miss. Among these owners, choosing a dog ran on breed, whim, and role, not on anything resembling ancient survival logic.

Reading back through that list, I recognize more of my own reasoning than I expected to — though I'd like to think there was a bit more thought behind it than "spur of the moment."

The people actually making these choices — parents, renters, first-time owners — rarely show up in the research the way the ancient wolves do. It's a gap the current evidence doesn't close, and probably shouldn't be smoothed over.

Selection didn't stop when the last Ice Age ended. It just traded the campfire for the living room.

So the honest answer to the title question is that scientists disagree less than it looks like, and more than they'd like. The window is narrowing. Where it happened, and how many times, is still open by the researchers' own account.

What isn't in dispute is the length of it. Dogs have been living alongside people for at least fourteen thousand years, and the direct evidence now reaches closer to sixteen. Through every version of the story about how it started, the animal itself has stayed put.

I think about that most in the smaller moments: a dog padding along on a walk I half-remember from childhood, or one waiting by the door on an ordinary evening in middle age.

Nobody chose this, not entirely, not all at once. We just kept showing up for each other, generation after generation, until neither of us has a history that doesn't include the other.
