The heat has not let up in weeks. I've lived through fifty summers, but this one is different — the kind that stays with you.

Asia is baking. So is Europe. So is North America. Somewhere in the middle of all that heat, one question keeps surfacing: should I move? North, maybe. Or as far as Australia or New Zealand.

Heat waves like this one keep raising an old question in a new form: when the climate turns hostile, do people actually pack up and go? Climate migration research says often, yes — but rarely in the direction, or for the reasons, most headlines assume. This piece follows that question from the routes our earliest ancestors walked to the specific villages already deciding whether to leave home for good.

When the Body's Cooling System Stops Working

The reason this summer feels different might not be a feeling at all.

The body cools itself mainly by sweating; heat leaves as moisture evaporates off the skin. When humidity climbs alongside temperature, that evaporation slows, and the body has fewer ways to shed heat it is still producing. The CDC connects prolonged exposure to heat exhaustion, heatstroke, dehydration, and added strain on the heart and lungs.

There is a point where sweating stops helping. Not because the body gives up, but because the air around it is already carrying about as much moisture as it can hold.

That point is arriving more often than it used to. The IPCC's 2021 assessment ties much of that shift to human influence: greenhouse-gas emissions are increasing the atmosphere's heat-trapping effect, and as a result, extreme heat has grown both more frequent and more intense across many regions since the 1950s.

It's tempting to read this year's heat as an anomaly. The data reads more like a pattern settling in.

Climate migration describes movement driven, at least in part, by climate-related pressure on water, food, livelihoods, or safety. The World Bank's 2021 Groundswell model estimates that up to 216 million people could be forced to move within their own countries by 2050. It's a scenario-based projection across six regions, including Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America, that shifts with future emissions and development choices rather than a fixed forecast.

That's a modeled ceiling, not a headcount — and it's a reminder that the question I'm turning over from my own front step is already a live one for millions of people who won't get to weigh it the way I can.

The Choice That Isn't Always a Choice

Here's the part that surprised me most: the people facing the worst of this heat are often the ones least able to leave it.

The World Bank's modeling treats climate pressure as one input among several. Income, land rights, social networks, and government policy all shape whether someone can actually move. A family with savings and options might read a heat wave as a prompt to relocate. A family without either has to treat the same heat wave as something to endure, since leaving costs money and connections they don't have.

The IPCC's 2022 assessment gives this condition a place in the research: people who want to move but can't, held back by lost resources, health needs, caregiving duties, border restrictions, or discrimination. That is close to the opposite of the story most heat wave coverage tells.

The International Organization for Migration's 2026 report adds a related point. Most of this movement happens inside a country's own borders rather than across them, and pinning a single motive on any one departure is rarely accurate.

Maybe that's the real dividing line in climate migration. Not geography, but whether leaving was ever actually on the table.

Ancient Instincts, Modern Myths

I used to think the story of human migration was simple: heat pushes, people move, and geography writes itself into the genes that follow. The record complicates that fast. Fossils from Jebel Irhoud, Morocco, dated to roughly 315,000 years ago, place early Homo sapiens far earlier, and farther from any single "cradle," than once assumed — a 2017 study in Nature built that case. The exodus that followed moved in waves stretched across tens of thousands of years, reaching Sahul long before anyone crossed into the Americas — proof that migration has never had one clean cause, then or now.

Two Nature studies, one from 2016 and one from 2018, make the same point at the genetic level. Aboriginal Australian and Papuan ancestors split from other Eurasian populations roughly 51,000 to 72,000 years ago; Native American ancestry traces to its own founding population, not to any people living in Asia today. Labeling one group "Southeast Asian" and the other "East Asian," the shorthand most people reach for, collapses tens of thousands of years of separate history into a modern map that was never built to hold it.

The National Academies made a related argument formally in 2023: geographic and ethnic labels are poor stand-ins for deep ancestry, because the two were never mapped onto each other in the first place. It's the same lesson climate migration keeps teaching in miniature — no single label, and no single cause, explains why anyone actually moves.

Where You Land Matters More Than Where You Run

The instinct is to picture a cooler line on the map and aim for it. The research keeps pointing somewhere else: what matters isn't how far you go, but what's waiting when you get there.

The World Bank's 2021 analysis frames migration as a genuine adaptation option only when the receiving city can actually support it. Jobs, housing, infrastructure, and public services all have to be in place, not assumed.

Arrive in a city with too little cooling, too few clinics, or housing that traps heat instead of shedding it, and the risk doesn't disappear. It just changes shape. A lot of that risk is mundane; why so much of Europe still has no air conditioning is one small, concrete example of how unprepared even wealthy regions can be for the heat they're now getting.

That includes the places people instinctively assume are safe. The IPCC's Australasia chapter, which covers both Australia and New Zealand, finds rising risk from extreme heat, wildfire, drought, and sea-level rise across the region — the same two countries that come up in casual conversation as a fallback from climate stress elsewhere.

"Somewhere else" sounds automatically safer from a distance. Up close, the real question is what that somewhere else has actually built.

The Villages Already Deciding

Some communities aren't weighing this question in the abstract. They're doing it village by village, right now.

Several Alaska Native villages have spent years assessing whether to relocate entirely. Federal and tribal records describe coastal erosion, thawing permafrost, flooding, storm damage, and threatened infrastructure as long-standing risks in these communities. The U.S. Government Accountability Office reported as early as 2009 that some villages had already begun considering or pursuing relocation specifically because of erosion and flooding, even as funding gaps and unclear jurisdiction slowed the process.

That delay isn't a bureaucratic footnote. It's the reason a community can identify its own risk clearly and still not be able to act on it.

Department of the Interior materials from recent years describe relocation planning as more than a logistics problem. Land in these communities carries language, hunting and fishing rights, burial grounds, and generations of accumulated knowledge that a new site can't simply replace.

That's a different kind of cost than the one in a moving-truck estimate, and it rarely shows up in headlines about climate migration.

The pattern here isn't really about permafrost or erosion. It's about who gets to make this decision on their own terms, and who has been asking for years without much of an answer.

I keep circling back to our ancestors. Long before paperwork or borders, they moved with the land, following food, water, and manageable temperatures, generation after generation. The genetic thread connecting them to us is real, if rougher and older than the tidy version anyone tells at a dinner table.

It's a rough sketch, not a map anyone could file for a permit. Whatever this heat outside my window is asking of me, my ancestors already answered some version of that question. They just didn't need a passport to do it.

I don't know yet if I'll go. But I know now the question is older than I am, and it never once had a simple answer.
