We were halfway through dinner when the conversation turned to the weather, the way it does now. My wife said what most people say: it is not what it used to be, and hardly anyone bothers arguing the point anymore.

If losses like the 2024–25 season keep repeating, the crops most exposed are the pollination-dependent ones: almonds, apples, cherries, berries, melons, and pumpkins. USDA credited honey bee pollination with roughly $15 billion in annual US crop value in a 2014–2015 assessment. Grains such as wheat, rice, and corn are wind- or self-pollinated, which puts them outside this particular squeeze.

Then comes the part that reframes the figure. In the same reporting, the researchers put the typical annual loss over the previous decade at 40 to 50 percent, and a separate long-running national beekeeping loss survey puts the 15-year average closer to 42 percent. Neither number is one a business simply shrugs off. That same survey's most recent full-season count, covering April 2025 through April 2026, came in lower still — an estimated 39.9 percent, just under the 15-year average and a real drop from the two record years just before it.

Even outside a crisis year, beekeepers write off close to half the hives.

Losing them is not the end of the work. It is the start of it: splitting the surviving colonies, buying replacement queens, feeding, and managing disease and parasites, all before the next season's contracts come due.

It is hard not to read that rebuild as the place the damage actually lives. Not a missing jar of honey, but a smaller fleet of healthy colonies available the following spring, at a higher price.

I came to this expecting a list of foods that vanish. The material doesn't support one, and the reason sits in the mechanism itself.

So the honest version of the question changes shape. It reads less like which foods disappear and more like which crops absorb the cost, in yield, in grade, and in what a grower pays to have pollen moved on time.

Most writing about honey bees puts them in a meadow. The colonies attached to an American grocery store spend a good part of the year on a flatbed.

Commercial beekeeping here is a logistics operation: colonies move to match each crop's bloom calendar. USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture ties colony collapse and its related stresses directly to how hard it now is for beekeepers to meet that demand — a supply problem before it's an ecological one.

NIFA names what wears colonies down in general, and it's never one thing: varroa mites, disease, transport stress, and poor nutrition. It's a mix regulators are still untangling for any single bad season, 2025 included.

It would be easier for me to tell a single-villain story than the one the agencies actually publish.

Which is why the exposed foods are not simply the ones bees happen to like. Seen that way, it looks less like a die-off and more like a supply chain running with no slack left in it.

Where "Four Years Left" Came From, and What the Numbers Since 1947 Show

My wife had the four-year line somewhere in her head. Almost everyone does. No bees, and humanity has four years.

Keeping pollination on a cost line at all is its own kind of statement: it reads like an agency that stopped treating bees as wildlife and started treating them as infrastructure.

What I Told My Wife After I Looked

She wasn't wrong about the stakes. She was early to the wrong noun. Food doesn't vanish the day the hives do — what goes first is the margin: the yield, the grade, the price of getting pollen moved on time.

It is not only the bees, and we both knew that before the plates were cleared. By the time honey bees were actually gone, whatever took them would have been working for a very long time, and a change operating at that scale does not stop at insects. It reaches people, and it reaches health.

That is the part I keep sitting with. Not one species in trouble, but extinction itself quietly becoming an ordinary word. One that could eventually cover everything alive.
