Like Gauguin's three questions — Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going? — the universe keeps asking something we can't fully answer. Today, astronomy doesn't just look up to map stars. It asks, seriously, whether anything up there looks back. That question has stopped being purely philosophical. It's now a matter of public record, congressional testimony, and declassified military footage — radar data, pilot accounts, government reports, and still no clean answer. So it's worth asking plainly what the evidence in the most famous of these cases actually supports, and what it doesn't. That gap is exactly where this article lives.

UFOs, now officially called UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena), are no longer fringe territory. In 2021, the U.S. intelligence community released its first unclassified UAP report to Congress. In 2023, former intelligence officer David Grusch testified under oath that the government possesses recovered non-human craft, a claim that remains unverified. What does the actual evidence show? And more importantly: what does the way we argue about it reveal about us?

What the official record actually shows

The most important number in the UAP debate isn't the one people quote. It isn't the number of sightings, or the years of secrecy, or the hours of classified footage. It's this: out of 144 military UAP reports analyzed in the 2021 U.S. intelligence assessment, exactly one was resolved with high confidence. One. A large, deflating balloon.

That 2021 assessment, from the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence, drew on incidents reported primarily by U.S. Navy personnel between 2004 and 2021. Of the 143 that remained unexplained, eighteen showed "unusual flight characteristics," such as moving against the wind, accelerating without apparent propulsion, or changing altitude abruptly, and at least 11 involved near-miss reports from military pilots. The government's official position: unknown, requires further study.

The follow-up came in the 2022 annual report, released in January 2023, which expanded the catalog to 510 cases and ran an initial pass on 366 newly identified reports. Of those, 163 were characterized as balloons or balloon-like objects, 26 as drones, and 6 as clutter, according to NBC News. The report is careful with its own language: initial characterization, it notes, does not mean a case is positively resolved. What's interesting isn't the unexplained cases. It's the ordinary ones. Trained military personnel, operating advanced radar systems, repeatedly filed official reports on what later read as balloons and clutter — and that says something worth sitting with. Not about deception. About perception.

The Nimitz encounter: the most documented case

What makes the Nimitz case remarkable has less to do with the object than with the chain of documentation surrounding it — and how little that chain actually resolves.

In November 2004, about 100 miles off San Diego, the USS Princeton (an Aegis cruiser with the Nimitz strike group) had been tracking anomalous radar returns for days. As reported by Live Science, the signals showed objects dropping from roughly 80,000 feet to near sea level in what looked like under a second, then hovering. That figure is a reconstruction from radar data, not a measured value, and how to read those returns is part of what's disputed. On November 14, two F/A-18F pilots were diverted to take a look: Commander David Fravor and Lieutenant Commander Alex Dietrich.

Fravor described a white, oval object roughly 40 feet long, with no wings, no tail, and no visible exhaust, hovering above a disturbed patch of water. When he moved toward it, the object mirrored his approach; when he attempted an intercept maneuver, it accelerated and vanished. Less than a minute later, it reappeared on radar approximately 60 miles away, according to CBS News. A FLIR video from the encounter was leaked in 2017 and officially authenticated by the Pentagon in 2020.

Three explanations have circulated. First: an advanced U.S. classified program, unknown even to the Navy pilots involved. Second: sensor error and misperception. Analyst Mick West has argued the leaked FLIR video most likely shows a distant aircraft, with the apparent motion produced by the gimbal-mounted camera rather than the object, and that the dramatic radar figures rest on accounts that shifted over the years. Third: something not yet understood. The U.S. government's public position stays at the third option by default. None of the three has been ruled out, and none confirmed. Fravor himself, in congressional testimony, has been careful to say what he saw, not what it was. That precision matters.

Belgium, 1989: when the military couldn't explain it either

The Belgian UFO wave has a quality most of these cases lack: institutional credibility from the first moment, not decades later.

On the night of November 29, 1989, two gendarmes named Heinrich Nicoll and Hubert von Montigny were on patrol near Eupen, close to the German border, when they reported a large triangular object moving slowly at low altitude, with three bright white lights at its corners and a red light at its center. It made almost no sound. Over the following months, according to documentation compiled by researchers at UFO History, thousands of similar reports came in from across Belgium, from civilians, police, and military alike, describing what was by then a recognizable shape.

The Belgian Air Force scrambled two F-16s on the night of March 30–31, 1990, after ground radar at Glons picked up anomalous targets. By the Air Force's own chronology, the jets attempted lock-ons several times, and some tracks reportedly showed accelerations and altitude swings no known aircraft could match: one sequence had a target jumping from about 150 knots to over 1,000 in seconds, reportedly with no sonic boom. The pilots never got a visual in the cockpit. Major General Wilfried De Brouwer, then deputy chief of staff, later said publicly that the objects were real, structured, and unexplained. The force called the events an unidentified aerial phenomenon and reported no satisfactory explanation. That statement has never been retracted.

What distinguishes Belgium from most UAP cases is what didn't happen: no immediate reclassification, no official dismissal, no explanation offered years later that settled anything. The case simply remained open.

Years later, some witnesses asked the question that sits under all these cases: did we see something genuinely anomalous, or something we were primed to see? Skeptics offered grounded candidates, and some carry real weight. Later analysis, noted even in the Air Force's own report, attributed many of the radar contacts to Bragg scattering, a known atmospheric interference, and one account holds that the only firm lock the F-16s achieved was on the other F-16. The famous Petit-Rechain photograph of a glowing triangle was studied by NASA and France's national research center without a verdict, until a man confessed in 2011 that he'd faked it with a polystyrene model. What that leaves is genuinely mixed: thousands of consistent ground sightings and an open official statement on one side, contested radar and a debunked photo on the other. The gendarmes near Eupen had no reason to expect anything. The case never got an answer that settled it.

Roswell: what the evidence does and doesn't support

Roswell is the hardest case to write about honestly, because the cultural weight of it has almost nothing to do with what the documentation actually shows.

In early July 1947, rancher W. W. "Mac" Brazel discovered debris scattered across a field on his property near Roswell, New Mexico, after a storm. He collected pieces of thin metallic foil, rubber, and wooden sticks, and reported them to the local sheriff. On July 8, Roswell Army Air Field issued a press release stating a "flying disc" had been recovered. Hours later, the Army walked it back: the debris was from a weather balloon. That retraction is where the modern mythology begins.

In the 1990s, the Air Force conducted two formal investigations, documented in reports titled The Roswell Report: Fact vs. Fiction in the New Mexico Desert (1994) and The Roswell Report: Case Closed (1997). Their conclusion: the debris came from Project Mogul, a classified high-altitude balloon program designed to detect Soviet nuclear tests. As for the "non-human bodies" some witnesses later described, the Air Force attributed those accounts to anthropomorphic crash-test dummies dropped in high-altitude parachute experiments. But those tests ran in the 1950s, and the gap between them and the 1947 incident has never been cleanly resolved.

Some witnesses insisted they saw materials unlike anything conventional: metal that sprang back into shape after being creased, strange symbols. Sheridan Cavitt, the counterintelligence officer who examined the debris with Brazel, said in later interviews that he took it for balloon material then and still did. The accounts don't agree with one another, and some shift over the years. The Air Force explanation covers most of the physical evidence. What it can't explain is why the memories diverged so far, and why some grew more vivid with each passing decade rather than fading.

The harder question: what we choose to believe

The astrobiology community approaches extraterrestrial life from a place that has almost nothing to do with UAP discourse, and the contrast is instructive. A 2024 workshop of the European Astrobiology Network Association proposed a layered way of framing the question, more a conceptual map than a quantitative consensus: microbial life somewhere in the universe, highly likely; complex life beyond bacteria, probable; a civilization as capable as ours, statistically plausible. These judgments rest on biochemistry, planetary science, and the known abundance of exoplanets, not on eyewitness accounts or government files. Same question, opposite ends of the evidence spectrum.

That contrast points back at us. Recall that 2022 breakdown: well over half of the newly reviewed cases turned out to be balloons, drones, or clutter. Highly trained personnel, working multi-million-dollar sensors, filed formal incident reports on ordinary debris drifting through restricted airspace. This isn't incompetence. It's how strongly the mind fills the gap between what a sensor captures and what it means. The expectation of an anomaly helps produce one.

It helps to lay the famous cases side by side, sorted not by how strange they sound but by what kind of evidence actually backs them:

The mind doesn't record what's there. It builds a story from fragments — and when the fragment is a blip on radar at 80,000 feet, the story it builds can be remarkably consistent and remarkably wrong.

Carl Sagan had a phrase for an environment this noisy: extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. The standard cuts both ways. It demands more than a balloon on radar, and it demands more than a retracted press release from 1947. In the space between those two failures of evidence, the question stays genuinely open, which is exactly where it belongs until something closes it.

The question isn't just what's out there. It's how we decide what to believe about what we can barely see.

Politicians have turned UAPs into a weapon. One side waves them as proof of a cover-up; the other waves them as proof the first side is delusional. Neither is interested in the evidence. Both are interested in the leverage. Sagan's mirror still holds: the cosmos doesn't care about our hearings. What it offers instead is scale, the reminder that we are already inside something vastly larger than any government's secrets.

The unexplained cases in these reports aren't evidence of non-human intelligence. They point instead to the limits of human instrumentation and perception when confronted with something outside the expected. Those limits are real, and worth respecting. The fight over UAPs, whether they exist, who's hiding what, what it means, isn't really about the sky. It's about how we navigate genuine uncertainty without either flinching into denial or lunging into belief. What we're really facing, staring up at that ambiguous light, isn't a question about them. It's a question about the quality of our own attention.
